The Circle of Life

Well, that was quicker than even I expected.

Princess Sparklefairy, sadly, is no longer with us. It appears that while we were making our daily commute to school, he was making an ill advised bid for freedom. We came home to find his shrivelled remains lying next to his bowl.

Note to self, next time (because you just know that we're going to have to replace the fish asap) do not fill the bowl high enough to allow a successful suicide attempt.

lololol...sorry about your fish. You know, that's happened to me twice. Was he a betta?

Wait...I just read 2 posts before...you've had him for only a week? I'd definitely head to the store for another.

Um...yeah. A week would be overstating things. More like 4 days. He was a betta. Why? Are they known for this behaviour? Why did no one tell me I was buying a suicidal fish????

No way! Fishie died already? Yes, lower water level next time! The girls look absolutely adorable in their Halloween costumes, by the way!

Oh no!! We had a fish die in 2 days, and I said no more fish. Hopefully the next fish will be content to swim in her little bowl and be gazed upon lovingly for a much longer time.

The girls WERE absolutely adorable!!

from a fish point of view I would possibly suggest keep the water up but add a lid!! maybe some kind of mesh to still let air in but to allow suicidal fish the opportunity to express him or herself!!

Get a nice big bowl, more like a large goldfish bowl to give him lots of space to swim about and definitely put mesh on top, betta's are super jumpers since in the wild they live in rice paddies and leap from puddle to puddle. Btw princess sparklefairy is really a prince, all the pretty bettas are the males, you don't really see the females in pet stores since they're dull in coloring without the elaborate fins.

But you have to wonder about a fish that feels so inclined as to fly....

Wow, that was fast, even for a fish. RIP, Princess Sparklefairy.

Just a tip, but when you buy a wfish, you're supposed to put netting or something over the top of the tank for the first bit. Fish jump out to try to find their parameters. After about a week or so, you can remove the netting and you shouldn't have a suicide fish anymore!

Kimberly,

Sorry about Sparklefairy.

Guppies are hardy, resilient fish and they breed easiy, too! Very exciting for The Kid when she wakes up and finds tiny babies.

Best,

I’d recommend a container with a lid, betta’s are prone to jump out and kill themselves. Also, PetSmart should have a 15 day guarantee on the fish, so you can return him and get another fish at no charge. You have to bring the dead fish though, and usually a water sample.

About Me

You say "Single Mom," I say "Solo Mom." In my world, it's all about having your priorities in order, and getting my whites whiter than white is never, ever going to be a priority. Helping my girls paste glitter to their artwork, that's a priority. Sometimes I hide in the bathroom to get a bit of peace and quiet. But I never have to share the kisses.
