Fish: The Gateway Pet

Last week, there was a crack in my "no pets" armour, and we got a fish. Today, the walls came crumbling down: We got a kitten.

Yeah, I didn't see it coming either. I figured we'd bask in the clammy glow of fishy ownership for a while and then maybe start entertaining the possibility of a hamster or some other, cooler rodent (but not a gerbil. I am firmly anti-gerbil and no amount of warm fuzzies is going to change my mind on that one).

But...Then there were a bunch of kittens rescued by Animal Alert. And they needed homes, desperately. So, flushed with the success of Princess Sparklefairy 2.0 (the original Princess having been simply flushed), I volunteered to foster a kitten.

Which is how I came to have an adorable little bit of black fluff hiding under my bed and two little girls sprawled on the floor debating names.

You know that cats eat fish aye? I am hoping that kitty doesn't help princess sparklefairy 2.0 to commit harikari again!! see we all have a soft squishy spot for animals, be warned it gets dangerous as I have said before we have a menagerie that just seems to be getting bigger!!

Oh. Dear. A cat is better than a ferret or a large dog. And a kitten is just too cute. Congratulations!

Cats are the best pets. They are soft, warm and furry and they have a life of their own (which involves lots and lots of sleeping) that does not include standing at the door barking, waiting for you to take them out, or drooling all over visitors. And should you get tired of Princess Sparklefairy, the cat will probably be pleased to assist you in finding a solution for that problem (I still suspect that's why my mom allowed me to have a cat... I never cried over any of my dead fish anymore...) Enjoy!!

Congrats! That sounds like an absolutely classic life is good scene that you wish you had a camera for! Hope your family has many more of those!

first a fish, then a kitten...your girls are working their way up to a bigger pet :) Better get them a puppy before they're asking for a pig!

When I saw the title, I was so worried that you were working on Princess Sparklefairy #3 already. Whew!

Just wanted to say congrats! (Get a laser pointer, cats love to play with those!)

We're cat lovers around here and so far I've never had any problems with cats and fish co-existing. Wouldn't leave an uncovered goldfish bowl around though. Maybe a small tank?

Bet your kids are having a ball.

(Having owned a couple of gerbils, I will say that the only worse pet is a miniature hamster. Awful things. But hamsters? Love 'em.)

Our kitten is now closing on five months old, and has stopped attacking anything that moves. This is a relief, particularly to our 14-year-old cat. Little cat is also the cutest thing on legs. And the purr. Oh, lordy, the purr. Nothing beats a Thunderpurr.

But Princess Sparklefairy better watch her back.

About Me

You say "Single Mom," I say "Solo Mom." In my world, it's all about having your priorities in order, and getting my whites whiter than white is never, ever going to be a priority. Helping my girls paste glitter to their artwork, that's a priority. Sometimes I hide in the bathroom to get a bit of peace and quiet. But I never have to share the kisses.
